Invitation to Solitary Confinement: A Public Health Hazard Panel on July 15, 2020

Solitary confinement is a public health hazard, particularly during COVID-19. The improper use of solitary as a method of quarantine and medical isolation in our prisons and jails is contributing to the spread of COVID-19 in our larger un-incarcerated communities.

We cannot stop the spread of COVID-19 without addressing the spread in our prisons, jails, and detention centers. We cannot stop the spread of COVID-19 in our prisons, jails, and detention centers until we address the excessive use of solitary, which has increased by 500% since the start of COVID-19.

Solitary confinement is a public health hazard and contributes to the spread of COVID-19.

The Louisiana Stop Solitary Coalition invites you to attend a panel on the topic on July 15, 2020 from noon to 1:15pm CST through Justice & Accountability Center’s Facebook page.

Panelists: Mary Buser, Ivy Mathis, Jenny Lutz, Albert Woodfox, David Cloud, Terry Kupers

Health experts who have focused their work on incarcerated people will share why solitary is a critical issue and why we ALL need to address it in order to stop the spread. This panel will be offered through Facebook Live with time for Q&A.

If you have specific questions that you know you would like answered during the panel, you are welcome to email them to Vanessa Spinazola, Executive Director, Justice & Accountability Center of Louisiana, prior to 5pm on July 13.
