Responding to the Current Authoritarian Crisis
Part I: How We Got Here
December 2, 2025
7:00pm Eastern Time (US & Canada)
Organized by the Social Welfare Action Alliance (SWAA)
Join us to learn about key historical developments in previous outbreaks of authoritarianism and the ways people organized to resist them. We will examine earlier periods of reactionary mobilization, emphasizing the vital roles played by social movements and labor unions. We will also trace the roots of today’s repressive climate – including the global turn toward neoliberalism in the late 1970s and 1980s – to provide context and insight to help inform contemporary efforts to confront the current authoritarian moment.
Presenter:
Stephen Monroe Tomczak is a professor at Southern Connecticut State University, where he teaches courses in social welfare and community organization from an historical perspective. Tomczak is a SWAA National Steering Committee Member and President of the Social Welfare History Group.
SWAA is funded only through memberships. These help us to maintain our website and Zoom accounts and offer honorariums to webinar hosts.
