"The New Poor"
The Journal of Progressive Human Services is preparing a special edition on the influx of
previously middle class people into the ranks of the poor. We are encouraging contributions
in these areas in particular:
- voices of the newly dispossessed themselves: accounts by previously middle class people who "did everything right" according to predatory capitalism's rules of the game but whose lives were still shattered by a collapse in personal finances.
- social workers familiar with the situation of the newly poor who can provide accounts of new problems and effective interventions to address them, including preventive interventions such as educating against predatory lending practices.
- researchers who study the acceleration of income inequality in the United States.
- researchers who study the condition of those who were already in poverty before the current recession began and who now have no resources whatsoever.
- journalists for regional or mainstream media who have an interest in the problem but have been denied their editor's green light or whose stories were spiked.
- organizers who can offer suggestions and examples of new community activism.
The deadline for submissions is August 1, 2010.
